Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things -Jesus
There is a story told in religious manuscripts that understood and applied can be equally helpful in the secular world. The story is of Jesus Christ and his visit to the home of two sisters. These sisters had much in common. They were friends to Jesus and loved each other as well as both loved to serve. However, during Jesus’ stopover these sisters took on very different roles. Martha worked to prepare the home and the meal in every minute detail, while Mary her sister spent time talking to and listening to Jesus. After a while an exasperated Martha finally had enough and chastised Mary by asking Jesus to send her in to help with the house work and the preparations. Martha was definitely feeling a little indignant about working while Mary “played”. Martha had been certain that Jesus would chastise Mary for her laziness. To Martha’s surprise Jesus advised Martha that he recognized that she was troubled and worried about how the day was running. He explained to Martha that while she troubled herself it was Marry that was doing what was most important. Now if you think like I do you’re thinking “baloney”, Mary is sitting about talking and wasting time while I work. If both of us worked BOTH of us could be entertaining our guest. Perhaps Martha was correct, but this teacher gives us a different perspective that is especially awesome during this season both for business and in our homes. |
